Laila

Merchant Lind's daughter Laila is going to be baptized in church. The procession is attacked by a pack of wolves, and in the confusion during their flight, the child falls out of the sleigh. She is rescued at the last moment by Jampa, the boy servant with the wealthy Aslag Laagje, who takes care of the child and claims her to be his own daughter. The child is baptized and named Laila. She grows up together with Laagje's foster son Mellet, who falls in love with her. Laila, however, has met her cousin Anders Lind, and is falling for him. They arrange to meet one midnight by the Korsvarden cairn. But Anders does not turn up, as his father has suddenly fallen critically ill. Laila thinks he has abandoned her, and agrees to marry Mellet. But Jampa warns Anders, who manages to reach the church just before the wedding takes place. Everything is cleared up, and Laila falls into his arms.
