A documentary look at the secret life of girls.
The film begins with a group of girls in school uniforms making crank calls and laughing hilariously. The title appears over a closeup of a game of cat's cradle. We meet Mishala, a ten-year-old who would rather read good books than think about boys or go to dances. Next we meet Titi, age 12, who in contrast is very interested in boys and claims that she "thinks about boys all the time." Finally, we meet Melissa, age 13, a young girl who plays basketball with the boys and hopes one day to go to college and join the WNBA. The stories of these three girls and their friends, families, and communities occupy the rest of the film. One by one we hear how the three girls feel about puberty, periods, bras, boys and "becoming a woman."
