Haight Street is often remembered as a place of prominent drug use and flower children, and today is home to many street kids who strive to relive the true essence of Haight and Ashbury.
Street kids, travelers, gutter punks, and runaways are the names used to describe the myriad of youth living on the streets and parks in the Haight and Ashbury District, who refuse to submit to a corporate lifestyle, although the street itself is becoming more commercialized.
They range anywhere from the ages of 13 to 26. Some travel from the East Coast and others have lived in the area their entire lives. But what they all have in common is a love for acceptance, freedom, and ultimately, a simple life.
