9-11 As It Happened - MSNBC (2009)

In commemoration of 9/11, MSNBC once again rolled the tape of its coverage of 9/11 from that fateful morning. We all know what happened but to watch it unfold in real time, makes the horror somehow more searing. Like a suspense film, when you know the protagonist is about to be attacked by someone lurking in the shadows, you know what's going to happen. It was mesmerizing to watch the south tower fall again. Matt Lauer, Tom Brokaw and Katie Couris didn't realized for several minutes what had happened. And then there were the false reports--car bombs, Palestinian claims of repsonsibility. Andrea Mitchell quickly and presciently focused on Bin Laden. You also get to see the birth of Giuliani, the presidential candidate. With Bush totally off camera after reading My Pet Goat, Giuliani and Don Rumsfeld, who stayed at the Pentagon to help pull the injured out of the wreckage, had the leadership mantle to themselves. It's worth watching again. I hadn't felt the horror of the day for sometime. More than any memorial, the unfolding of events speaks to the tragedy of what happened.
